# Exponents and Functions

You have already used exponents to write numbers .

Note: 4^{2}=4*4=16

Here 2= ** Exponent **, 4=**Base** and 16 is ** Power **.

**Example1**: Use an exponent to rewrite xxxx.

** Solution : **x is used as a factor four times, therefore

You can multiply powers when the bases are the same.

Steps :

1.Rewrite each power as the product of factors .

2.Now, see how many times each base is used as a

factor .

**Example:** Multiply b^{2} . ab

Solution :

step1: bb . ab

Step2: abbb

Now rewrite with an exponent

**ab ^{3}**
