Exam 0 is an exam designed to gauge your preparedness for MAP 103. In general, this exam can be thought of as a test for prerequisites. What this exam will cover is sections 1.2-1.5 in Martin-Gay. Specifically, this means, topics will include elementary properties of real numbers (i.e. numbers on the real line, integers, etc.), facility with exponents and powers, usage of variables in algebraic expressions (i.e. simple algebraic expressions with exponents and powers), order of operations (PEMDAS), and rules such as the Associative and Commutative properties of Addition and Multiplication. There will be some review in class, but the majority of this subject matter will be burdened to you. The few material that can be used as review will be HW #1 and Quiz #1. Typical references: Martin-Gay, Intermediate Algebra, and any other basic algebra text, "First Day" Worksheet. This exam will have 15 questions.

Midterm Exam I:
Wednesday, September 28

Midterm I will cover sections will cover chapters 1-3 in Martin-Gay. Specifically, this means sections 1.1-3.5. Topics will include properties of Real Numbers, that is how to work with absolute value, rules for computing exponents, as well as, manipulations with exponents on expressions of many variables. In addition, you should be comfortable with identifying and using properties such as the Associative and Commuative properties. Understand that most of the exam will assume your familiarity with the operations of addition, substraction, multiplication, and division. Aside from this, other topics will include identification of linear equations, solving for unknown variables in linear equations including word problems that might involve ideas such as consecutive integers and consecutive odd/even integers. Further topics you should look at include how to compute the slope of a line, plot pairs of coordinates in the plane (xy-axis), as well as write lines using either the point-slope form or the usual slope-intercept form. Notice, that there may also be a word problem or two resulting from chapter 3, thus it would useful to look at those examples. Furthermore, you should be comfortable with the notions of functions that we studied that is: Relations, Definition of Function, Domain and Range, One-to-One Function, Horizontal and Vertical Line Tests, etc. Material that you can use for review will include HW #1-4, Quiz #1-4, and the sample Midterm posted on this webpage and on blackboard (they are the same), as well as the the Fall 2005 Practice Midterm. Bring ID to the exam and be prompt.

Midterm II is set to cover sections 3.5-6.3 in Martin-Gay. Specifically, there will be a good concentration of problems on the usage of functions. That is the notion of whether a function is one-to-one, if it is defined everywhere its domain, what the range might be. In sort of a non local characterization, all the problems on the midterm exam are going to be functions. That with respect to the problems in 6.1-6.3 there is emphasis on where a rational function is defined or undefined. Futhermore you should be comfortable with solving systems of equations using two methods. The first should an algebraic approach (using the preferred methods of elimination and substitution) alternatively as the second method you should be able to graphically determine the solution to any linear system. With respect to the graphical approach you should go back to sections 3.1-3.4 to review how to find the slope and intercept of a line. Of course in the unit on linear systems, there will be word problems more than likely. The nature of the problems will probably involve such items as consecutive integers or other related topics. Perhaps the most important chapter on the exam will be chapter 5. Chapter 5 if you recall focuses on polynomials and methods of factorization as well as identification of degree. Material that you might use to review include HW #5-8 and Quiz #5-10 as well as a Sample Midterm II Fall 2005 and previous midterm from Spring 2005 that are availble here and on blackboard. Bring ID to the exam and be prompt.
