Simplifying,Adding,and Subtracting Polynomials

Objective 1: Simplify polynomials in one variable by combing like terms

• To combine like terms :

o Add or subtract the coefficients
o Keep the variables and their exponents the same

• 4x + 9x

• -4m + 4m

•

Objective 2: Add polynomials in one variable

• To add polynomials combine like terms :

o Add or subtract the coefficients
o Keep the variables and their exponents the same

Objective 3: Write an expression for the perimeter of a given shape

• Remember:

o Perimeter = L + L + W + W

Objective 4: Subtract polynomials in one variable

• To subtract polynomials:

Change the operation symbol as an equivalent addition statement

Change the operation symbol from a minus sign to a plus sign
▪ Change all the signs in the second polynomial to their additive inverses

o Combine like terms

• (2x + 3) – (7x – 2)
