calculus.

Notes:
1) MAT 172 is a Precalculus course designed to prepare a student for a two semester calculus
sequence. Students whose educational plans require only one semester of calculus should not be
taking MAT 172. They should take MAT 171, and then MAT 174. If you have any questions,
please see Mr. Rothchild in G104 during his office hours.

2) We assume proficiency in MAT 104. Students lacking this proficiency will almost certainly
do poorly in this course, and are advised to either audit MAT 104 or go to Math Lab before
attempting MAT 172. Instructors may wish to give a brief diagnostic the first or second class.
Students should go to their instructor’s office hours, to Math Lab or to study groups ASAP when
they need help.

3) A simple (non-graphing) calculator is useful . Any calculator with ln x, ex, yx, and trig
function keys will be just fine.

4) Please remember that there is flexibility in the times allotted to topics by this syllabus, but
the topics in the syllabus must be covered by the instructor and understood by the student. Students
should regard mastery of MAT 172 as necessary for success in MAT 175.

5) Please feel free to speak to Mr. Rothchild in Gillet 104 during his office hours if you have
any questions.
