Exponents and Functions

Finding Powers :

You have already used exponents to write numbers .

Note: 42=4*4=16

Here 2= Exponent , 4=Base and 16 is Power .

Example1: Use an exponent to rewrite xxxx.
Solution : x is used as a factor four times, therefore

Multiplying With Exponents :

You can multiply powers when the bases are the same.
Steps :

1.Rewrite each power as the product of factors .
2.Now, see how many times each base is used as a
factor .

Example: Multiply b2 . ab

Solution :
step1: bb . ab
Step2: abbb
Now rewrite with an exponent

ab3
