Problema Solution

Pure acid is to be added to a 5% acid solution to obtain 95 liters of 85% solution. What amounts of each should be used?

Answer provided by our tutors

Let x litres of pure acid is added so, 95-x liters of 5% acid solution.

Therefore,

x*1+(95-x)(0.05)=(95)(0.85)

x+4.75-.05x=80.75

.95x=80.75-4.75

0.95x=76

x=76/(0.95)=80

Amount of pure acid added=80 liters and and amount of 5% acid added=95-80=15 liters.
